Sue:
Sounds like you were the oasis of kindness and gratitude in a naturally crabby environment. People who are sick have every reason in the world to be crabby - it just isn't any fun. Congratulations on going the extra step and expressing thanks to those who aided you.

I find most people respond very well to a smile, a little humor, and sincere expression of gratitude. Glad to see you back on your feet and getting better!

When I was in the hospital recently I thanked the aids, nurses and cleaning people. I might have been groggy and uncomfortable at times yet I really appreciated the help they gave me. Now as I look back at the crabby people in adjoining beds and I can compare the difference in response and service I recieved to the slow or no response they got.
I also smiled and laughed about how awkward I was and the "getting out of bed event" a true event which made them smile too.

Agreed Sue!

There is another book I'll be writing about: Tribal Leadership by John King, et. al. It has a amazingly simple model for understanding how collaborative organizations thrive. I now completely understand why team training fails in most cases despite the best intentions by team leaders, managers, and executives.
